Is a Doberman the right breed for you? Each and every dog in our rescue is different, but like all purebreds, there are some specific traits common to the breed. Although the Doberman is classified as a working breed, he is unlike any other due to his genetic makeup.
According to the Doberman Pinscher Club of America the breed originated in 19th century Germany. It is generally accepted as fact that the old German Shepherd (now extinct) contributed the ruggedness and intelligence of a herding breed and the German Pinscher, which is the ancestor of the Rottweiler and Weimaraner, contributed terrier traits such as quick and decisive reaction. It is documented that the Manchester Terrier and Greyhound were added later to contribute a more attractive look to the Dobe.
The protective traits of the Rottweiler are commonly found in our dogs but also softer, more sensitive traits from the Weimeraner and Greyhound are evident. Often Dobes exhibit high prey drive which can be attributed to the German Pinscher and Manchester Terrier, as well as watchful sight hound traits of the Greyhound. On the outside the Doberman appears to simply be another breed of dog, but inwardly he is a very complex creature due to his specific mixture of breeds.
The Doberman is one of the smartest dog breeds in the world! Not only highly intelligent, they are sweet, sensitive, loyal and devoted companion dogs that want and need to be with you and made part of the family. This breed needs calm, consistent expectations with owners that are firm yet never harsh! They want to please and thrive with positive reinforcement whether that’s with treats, toys or lavishing praise and attention.
An energetic breed, especially when young, your Dobe will need plenty of daily physical exercise to burn off energy in a productive and not destructive way. This also holds true for mental stimulation. Being a smart working breed means our dogs thrive with “jobs” and learning new things.
Dobes are perceptive and intuitive making them excellent Therapy dogs. Their athleticism makes them naturally inclined for performance sports such as Rally, Agility, Lure Coursing, Flyball or Dock Diving. Their high intellect and desire to please makes them equally capable of competing in Obedience.
